The village of Neelpur lay wrapped in a blanket of mist as dawn slowly approached. The chirping of birds had just begun, and a soft golden hue touched the horizon. But in a small mud house at the edge of the village, a twelve-year-old boy named Arif sat awake. While the rest of the village still slept, his eyes sparkled with quiet determination.
Arif was the son of a poor daily laborer. His father worked tirelessly in the fields, and his mother managed the small household with whatever little they had. Despite their struggles, Arif had one dream—he wanted to study and build a better life. However, in a family where every meal was uncertain, affording books and school fees was nearly impossible.
Every morning, before going to school, Arif would help his mother fetch water from the nearby well. Then he would walk three miles to the village school, barefoot, as he didn’t have shoes. His teachers admired his dedication, but they knew how difficult it was for him to continue his studies under such circumstances.
One afternoon, while passing through the village market, Arif noticed an old bookseller selling second-hand books. His heart leaped with joy when he spotted a worn-out mathematics book among the stack. He quickly checked his pockets and found only five rupees—his savings from helping a shopkeeper last week. Without hesitation, he handed over the money and clutched the book tightly, as if holding his dreams in his hands.
At night, Arif studied under the dim light of an oil lamp. His family could barely afford enough kerosene, so he often had to limit his study time. But that didn’t stop him. He solved mathematical problems with enthusiasm, sometimes using a stick to write equations on the ground when he ran out of paper.
One day, his school announced a scholarship exam for underprivileged students. The winner would get free education and books for the next five years. Arif knew this was his golden opportunity. He spent every free moment preparing, reading his borrowed books, and practicing sums in the sand outside his home.
The exam day arrived, and Arif gave it his best effort. Weeks passed, and then the results were announced. To his amazement, he had secured the first position. His teachers and classmates clapped for him, while his parents’ eyes filled with tears of pride and happiness.
With the scholarship, Arif could now continue his education without financial worries. He promised himself that one day, he would become a teacher and help children like him who struggled to study due to poverty. His journey was still long, but he had taken the first step toward a brighter future.
As the morning sun rose over Neelpur, Arif stood outside his house, looking at the sky with hope. He knew that this was just the beginning, and with hard work and determination, he could achieve anything.
